Seriously, Summer School?!?

 Seriously, Summer School?!?

During my 15 years in the classroom this will be my 12th year teaching summer school. The 3 years I did not teach summer school were for some great reasons: traveling back from teaching overseas & taking 2 summers off after having my son.

Why have I spent the month of June almost every summer teaching besides the extra income?

I live and teach in an area where families need this extra month to help their children have 2 meals they may not get or added free enrichment classes. Summer school is not just for students that need the extra academic support although we do give about 2 hours every day to academics.

I have always considered teaching a ministry and the month of June is spent as an added opportunity for me to invest in students' so that someday they enter into their community as adults making a positive impact.

Are you teaching summer school?

Here is my regular daily schedule for my students who will be going into Kindergarten in the Fall:

  • Social Emotional Learning
  • Phonological Awareness
  • Recess
  • Letter Focus (2 letters a day)
  • Lunch
  • Recess
  • Math Lesson and Partner Games
  • Recess
  • Fine Motor Activities/ Name Practice
  • Enrichment Class
  • Read Aloud
As you see there is a lot of time for students to build social skills with their peers. This is one of the key areas in getting ready for school.

Can this be modified for older grades? Absolutely!!! Contact me I have taught summer school for students going into Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade. The modifications are a lot easier than you may think.

Social Emotional Learning: I use FREE resources from Whole Brain Teaching. Everything on their Official TPT store is free. I also use the free resources from the Choose Love Movement.

Phonological Awareness: Heggerty has free resources that are researched based for student who have completed preschool all the way through first grade!!!

Letter Focus: All my resources I use come from Little Minds at Work and Droppin' Knowledge with Heidi

Math: All from Little Minds at Work. Yes, Tara West is one of my favorites!!!

Fine Motor Activities/ Name Practice: I use activities from Tara West's Fine Motor Practice and use Name Resources from Play to Learn Preschool.

Enrichment Class: These classes are sponsored by our district's LEAP program. I do not plan the class but I am assisting the coordinator. This is where the students get added science and fine arts enrichment.
